A Step-by-Step Guide to Upstox's TPIN Creation Platforms like Upstox have made stock trading in India a digital revolution,

providing investors with a seamless experience. The Transaction Personal Identification Number, or TPIN, is one of the safety features added for secure transactions, especially when selling shares from your demat account. TPIN is a safer and quicker method of authorizing the sale of securities than the conventional Power of Attorney (PoA) system. This guide will walk you through each step necessary to generate a TPIN in Upstox. What exactly is TPIN? A six-digit PIN called a TPIN is given by CDSL (Central Depository Services Limited) to let the broker, in this case Upstox, access your demat account's holdings. It adds a layer of security by requiring your approval before shares can be sold, replacing the previous requirement to submit a physical PoA form. Why is TPIN so crucial? Secure authorization: The TPIN guarantees that transactions can only be authorized by the account holder. No need for a Power of Attorney: TPIN makes it unnecessary to sign and submit a Power of Attorney. Quick and digital: You can authorize sales with just a few clicks and your TPIN.

Regulatory requirement: CDSL mandates TPIN usage for brokers who haven’t received PoA from clients.

When is a TPIN Required? when you trade shares out of your demat account. when you haven't sent Upstox your PoA. when you want to give your hold's sale permission for a specific day or session.

Search for "CDSL TPIN" in the account settings or select the "Demat" tab. 4. Click on ‘Generate TPIN’

Upstox will redirect you to the CDSL page.

Enter your Beneficiary Owner ID (BO ID), which is typically a 16-digit number that starts with 120. Alternatively, this is auto-filled by Upstox.

 5. Check with the OTP Enter the OTP that was sent to your registered email address (linked with CDSL) and mobile number. 6. You received your TPIN. After verification, your TPIN will be sent to your registered mobile number and email.

 Save this TPIN securely.

Method 2: Directly via CDSL Portal

Follow these steps if you'd rather generate your TPIN without logging into Upstox: 1. Head over to the CDSL TPIN Generation Page. To learn more, go to: https://edis.cdslindia.com/home/generatepin 2. Fill in your BO ID. Your BO ID is available in the ‘Profile’ section of your Upstox account.

It is a demat account-specific 16-digit number. 3. Enter the OTP and PAN. Complete the OTP verification sent to your registered mobile or email address by entering the PAN card number. 4. Get the TPIN Your TPIN will be sent to you via SMS and email.

How to Use TPIN to Authorize Sell Orders

After generating your TPIN, here’s how to use it for selling shares:

 1. Make a Buy Order Choose the stock you want to sell and click on ‘Sell’.

 2. Prompt Authorization The CDSL e-DIS (Electronic Delivery Instruction Slip) portal will be redirected to your computer. 3. Enter TPIN

When prompted, enter your TPIN. 4. Give the Holdings permission It's possible that you'll be asked to select the stocks and quantities you want to sell. 5. Complete Transaction

After successful authorization, your sell order will be processed.

Note: Authorization is valid only for the day, or until the specified quantity is sold.

Common Problems and Their Solutions 1. Forgot TPIN?

You can regenerate your TPIN anytime by visiting CDSL’s TPIN generation page.

 2. No BO ID Found? Log in to Upstox > Profile > Demat Account Details. You’ll find the 16-digit BO ID there.

 3. Didn’t Receive TPIN?

Check your spam/junk folder in email.

Make sure your mobile number and email are correctly linked with CDSL.

Things to Consider Your TPIN should never be shared, just like a PIN for an ATM. Valid for all holdings: The TPIN is used to authorize any holding in your demat account and is not specific to any particular share. can be used again: a new TPIN isn't needed for every transaction. Unless it has been reset or changed, use the same one. If you authorize shares for sale but do not sell them that day, you will need to reauthorize the following day. Authorization expires daily.
