Mental Health’s Effect on Physical Health
When people experience high levels of stress, anxiety, or depression, their bodies undergo various physiological changes. Stress triggers the release of cortisol, a hormone that, in high levels, can weaken the immune system, elevate blood pressure, and increase the risk of heart disease. Anxiety can contribute to muscle tension, headaches, and digestive issues like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Depression has also been linked to chronic conditions such as diabetes, as it can lead to poor lifestyle choices, such as poor diet, lack of exercise, and disrupted sleep.
