*Would you like to know what happens when a person consumes excess sugar frequently?*


Before I give you an insight into that, let me explain something called Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is a measurement used for calculating a person's weight status. It is calculated by dividing a person's weight in kilograms by their height in meters squared (kg/m²). BMI is divided into four categories:


1. *Underweight* (BMI < 18.5): A person with a BMI below 18.5 is considered underweight.

2. *Normal weight* (BMI = 18.5-24.9): A person with a BMI that is between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered to have a normal weight.

3. *Overweight* (BMI = 25-29.9): A person with a BMI between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight.

4. *Obese* (BMI ≥ 30): A person with a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese.


While BMI is a useful tool for assessing weight status, it has its limitations. For example, it does not account for muscle mass or body composition. Nonetheless, it's a good starting point for understanding your weight status. I think you would like to assess your weight online using BMI one of these days.


Anyways, that's not my main point of discussion. Going back to the first question I asked at the beginning of this article, when someone consumes excess sugar frequently, a lot of things happen depending on the person's health status.


1. *Metabolism and Sugar Consumption*: There are people with naturally fast body metabolism, whereas there are people with naturally slow body metabolism. A fellow with a slow body metabolism upon excessive consumption of sugar over time could encounter serious health issues, and I'll focus on just one of it now, which is *OBESITY*. When you eat, your body converts the food into glucose for cell respiration and production of energy for the body. Excess glucose in the body would be converted into glycogen that is readily available for use. Now, when glycogen becomes excess due to slow body metabolism, it will be converted into fat that is stored under the skin. Excess fat over time will lead to weight gain and eventually result in obesity, which is a major health issue.


Obesity is associated with numerous health risks, including cardiovascular diseases, certain cancers, and joint problems. It's essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and regular exercise, to prevent obesity. A slow body metabolism might not necessarily result in obesity if the person ensures a healthy lifestyle and regular physical activity to burn off excess fat.


On the other hand, a person with a fast body metabolism breaks down sugar into glucose easily and quickly. That's why you'll see a person who loves eating a lot of sugary things and still remains skinny. That fellow has a high body metabolism. However, this doesn't mean a person with fast body metabolism cannot be obese. It all depends on the person's diet and overall health care. Although it's less likely for a person with high body metabolism to be obese, it isn't impossible.


*Causes of Obesity*: Obesity is the major end product of excessive sugar consumption, but excessive sugar consumption is not the only causative agent of obesity. Hormonal imbalance and heredity could also be agents. Other factors, such as lack of physical activity, poor diet, and certain medications, can also contribute to obesity.


2. *Diabetes*: Excessive consumption of sugar increases the chances of diabetes. Diabetes is a serious health issue where the body finds it hard to balance the level of sugar in the blood. There are two main types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the body's immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disorder characterized by insulin resistance and impaired insulin secretion. Diet, exercise, and medication play a crucial role in managing diabetes.


3. *Dental Issues*: Consumption of sugar could also lead to tooth decay and dental issues. Sugar contributes to the formation of acid in the mouth, which can damage tooth enamel and lead to cavities. Good oral hygiene practices, such as regular brushing and flossing, can help prevent tooth decay.


4. *Other Health Impacts*: Excessive sugar consumption can lead to high blood pressure, mobility issues, and in some cases, stroke. High sugar intake has also been linked to cognitive decline and mental health issues. It's essential to be mindful of sugar intake and maintain a balanced diet to prevent these health issues.


*Hidden Sugars*: Many processed foods and beverages contain hidden sugars, which can contribute to excessive sugar intake. Reading food labels and being aware of the different names for sugar (e.g., high fructose corn syrup, sucrose, maltose) can help you make informed choices.


*Healthy Alternatives*: Reducing sugar intake can be achieved by choosing natural sweeteners, such as honey or maple syrup, and reducing portion sizes.


Conclusion:

Sugar is not a bad thing to consume but excess of everything is bad so we should ensure we regulate our sugar intake, exercise regularly and eat balanced diet. This will ensure our overall health and wellness.​
