The Evolution of Digital Slang: How TikTok is Reshaping Modern English
Throughout history, language evolution was a gradual process driven by geographic migration, trade, and traditional print media. New dialects took decades—sometimes centuries—to standardise and spread. Today, however, the digital ecosystem has completely upended linguistic development.
At the epicentre of this shift is TikTok, a platform whose hyper-tuned recommendation algorithm and short-form video format have transformed the speed, reach, and nature of how modern English evolves.

Traditionally, youth subcultures—from beatniks to punks—created informal vocabulary, or slang, to form group identities and differentiate themselves from older generations.
While platforms like Twitter and Instagram accelerated this process, TikTok has amplified it exponentially.
The Oxford University Press named "rizz" its Word of the Year in 2023, and followed it by crowning "brain rot" in 2024—a term explicitly linked to the overconsumption of low-value, fast-paced digital content.
The mechanics of TikTok uniquely suit it to linguistic innovation. Unlike text-based platforms, TikTok relies on audio loops, spoken dialogue, and visual context.
This multimedia environment encourages post-ironic, absurdist language, often referred to by younger generations as "brainrot" vocabulary.

Furthermore, TikTok’s global reach creates an unprecedented flattening of regional accents and dialects. Standard English, African American Vernacular English (AAVE), British slang, and localized internet idioms cross-pollinate rapidly.
However, this unprecedented speed brings a high rate of linguistic decay. Because the algorithm rewards novelty, terms burn out as quickly as they emerge.
A word can progress from insider terminology to mainstream ubiquity—and finally to cringeworthy obsolescence—in a matter of weeks.
Critics argue that this rapid cycle leads to a degradation of deep vocabulary and formal writing skills.
Yet, many linguists view the phenomenon differently: rather than damaging the language, digital slang demonstrates the flexibility and vitality of English as a living, adaptable system.
TikTok has transformed modern English from a relatively slow-moving vessel into a fast-paced, real-time mirror of online culture.
While many viral terms will fade into history as fleeting trends, the underlying mechanism of language adoption has fundamentally changed.
Digital slang is no longer just a trend among youth; it is a primary driver of contemporary linguistic drift.
