Who Made the First Computer Virus? A Fun Story from the Early Days

Hey there! Ever wondered which country kicked off the whole computer virus thing? It’s not as scary or mysterious as you might think. Grab a snack, and let’s dive into this cool piece of history in a simple way.who-made-the-first-computer-virus-a-fun-story-from-the-early-days

The Very First One: Creeper from America

Way back in 1971, a guy named Bob Thomas in the United States created something called Creeper. This was the world’s first computer virus (well, more like a worm). Computers back then were huge and only connected in special networks like ARPANET – the early version of the internet.
Bob didn’t want to cause trouble. He was just testing an idea: Could a program copy itself and move from one computer to another? Creeper did exactly that! When it landed on a machine, it showed a funny message: “I’m the creeper, catch me if you can!”
It didn’t delete files or steal stuff. It was like a playful game. But guess what? It worked and spread a bit. Soon after, another smart guy made a program called Reaper to hunt it down and delete it. That was basically the first antivirus ever!
So, yes – the United States created the very first computer virus.

What About Pakistan’s Brain Virus?

A lot of people think Pakistan made the first one because of the Brain virus in 1986. Two brothers in Lahore, Pakistan, built it. They ran a small computer shop and were upset that people kept copying their software without paying.
Brain spread through floppy disks (those old square things people used to save files). It was meant to stop copying, and it left a message saying “Welcome to the Dungeon.” This one hit regular home computers and spread fast in real life.
Brain was super important for personal computers, but Creeper came first by about 15 years.

Why Does This Story Matter?

These old viruses started as experiments or smart fixes, not big attacks. Today, viruses can be really bad – locking your files or stealing money. But it all began with simple curiosity!
From giant old machines to our phones and laptops, computer viruses have come a long way. It’s crazy to think one fun message started it all.
What do you think? Pretty interesting, right? Next time your computer acts weird, you’ll know where the trouble first began. Got any virus stories of your own?
