Ryne Sandberg was born in Spokane, Washington, on September 18, 1959, and was named after relief pitcher Ryne Duren. Excelling in multiple sports in high school at North Central, he was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 20th round of the 1978 MLB draft. He debuted briefly with the Phillies in September 1981 before being traded to the Cubs in a deal that would become one of the most lopsided trades in MLB history—bringing him to Chicago where he blossomed into a superstar.
