How To Stay Productive While Hosting Long-Stay Guests

For the past few months, I've had guests staying at my home. Since I was only used to hosting guests for a few days at a time, adjusting to a longer stay was a challenge. The experience taught me how to remain productive while balancing family responsibilities and writing commitments.

Fortunately, the change didn't significantly affect my productivity. Most of my articles have already been drafted, so I mainly needed to focus on editing and making revisions before publishing.

Here are a few strategies that have helped me stay productive while hosting long-term guests:

Create a Dedicated Writing Time

A busy household can make it difficult to concentrate, especially when children are involved. One way to maintain your writing consistency is to set aside a dedicated block of time for writing each day. Having a quiet space and a specific writing schedule can help you focus despite household distractions.

Avoid Leaving Work Until the Last Minute

Leaving the piece until the last minute can lead to stress, procrastination, and mental exhaustion. Since the brain isn't designed to handle multiple tasks at once, it's better to spread your workload over several days. Try to complete your work over a few days rather than forcing yourself to finish everything in a single session.

Make Guests Feel Welcome While You Work

Working while in the presence of the guests can make it look awkward. However, you don't need to be available around the clock simply to entertain guests. One way to focus on your writing while welcoming guests is to acknowlege his/her presence and ask if they need anything. This will ensure that your guests will feel that they are staying in a friendly atmosphere.

Accept The Temporary Change

You have to accept the fact that they are going to stay for longer. Even a stay that lasts a few months can disrupt your writing routine. If you're finding it hard to concentrate or maintain your routine, politely explain that you need some uninterrupted writing time. This will help your guests to understand that this is the time you write.

Adjust Your Routine Accordingly

Rather than continuing your normal routine, you can ask your guests when they usually wake up and what times they prefer for lunch and dinner. This will help you prepare meals on time rather than stressing out and assuming what time they will eat.

Final Thoughts

Balancing your writing routine while hosting long-term guests requires flexibility, planning, and patience. The presence of my guests, who are going to stay for a few months, taught me that productive writing isn't about ignoring guests; it's about finding a balance between staying productive and making your guests feel welcome.

If you're hosting long-term guests, these strategies can help you maintain your writing routine without sacrificing hospitality. With a little flexibility and planning, it's possible to stay productive while making your guests feel welcome.
