You’ve eaten plenty of bananas. But have you ever tried a banana flower?
In many villages, people call it "Kele ka phool" or "Banana heart". Our elders used to cook it often. But most of us living in cities forgot about it.
That was a big loss.
Because this purple flower isn’t just food. Traditional herbal medicine has used it for women’s health for hundreds of years. And now modern research also shows it’s powerful for your heart, stomach, and overall health.
I started eating it twice a week about 15 days ago. First bite tasted a bit bitter, I won’t lie. But after a week, my stomach felt lighter and my bloating went down almost 70%. So I’m sharing everything I learned.
Let’s keep it simple: First the benefits, then the warnings, then how to cook it.
- 1. Helps with High BP: Full of Potassium
Banana blossom has even more potassium than banana fruit. A 2023 nutrition report shows 100 grams of banana flower has 553mg of potassium.
What does that do? Potassium pushes extra sodium out of your body. When sodium drops, your blood vessels relax. That brings BP down.
I know someone whose BP was always high. His doctor said to add this sabzi 3 times a week with his regular medicine. After 2 months, his reading moved from 150/90 to 130/85.
Important: If you already take BP tablets, ask your doctor before eating this daily. Your BP might drop too much.
- 2. Great for Women: Eases Period Pain and PCOD Issues
This is where it really shines. Old herbal texts call it helpful for “heavy bleeding” during periods.
It has magnesium. Magnesium calms the muscles in the uterus. That means less cramps, less pain.
It also has iron. So it helps replace the blood lost during periods. That’s why many herbal practitioners suggest it to women dealing with PCOD.
Real case: A neighbor of mine had 7-8 day cycles with heavy flow. She added this to her diet 3 times a week. After 3 months, her cycle came back to 5 days and normal.
- 3. Good for Blood Sugar: Very Low Glycemic Index
The Glycemic Index of banana blossom is just 20. That means it won’t shoot your blood sugar up fast.
A 2022 study in the Journal of Food Science and Technology found it improves how your body uses insulin. So sugar gets used better, not stored.
It’s also full of fiber. The fiber slows digestion. You stay full longer and don’t get random cravings. Helps with both weight and sugar.
But remember: This is food, not medicine. Keep taking your prescribed meds. Add this as support, not replacement.
- 4. Fights Low Blood / Weakness
Yes, it has iron. Around 1.6mg per 100 grams. Doesn’t sound like much, but it also has copper and vitamin E.
Those 3 work together to help your body make new red blood cells. If you feel weak, dizzy, or short of breath because of low hemoglobin, this can help.
- 5. Cleans Your Stomach: Helps Constipation and Ulcers
It has both types of fiber - soluble and insoluble. Think of it like a soft broom for your gut. If you struggle with constipation, try 1 small bowl daily for a month.
It also contains natural compounds that help heal stomach ulcers. Research published in the Indian Journal of Experimental Biology backs this up.
- 6. Protects Your Cells: Strong Antioxidants
It contains Quercetin and Catechin. These are antioxidants. Their job is to eliminate free radicals from your body.Free radicals damage cells and can start disease over time.
Even eating this once a week helps your body clean itself from inside.
- 7. Calms Your Mind: Magnesium for Sleep and Stress
Magnesium is known as a relaxing mineral. It slows down your brain.. If you struggle to sleep or feel anxious all day, banana blossom works like a natural calmer.
Side Effects: Who Should Be Careful? Read This
Every good thing has limits. Avoid or ask a doctor first if:
1. You’re allergic to bananas:The flower might cause the same reaction. Test with 1 teaspoon first.
2. Surgery is planned: It can thin blood slightly. Stop 2 weeks before surgery.
3. You have low BP already: It may lower it further. Check with your doctor.
4. Pregnancy: Old herbal systems treat it as a strong herb. Don’t use without asking a qualified practitioner. It is not safe to use during pregnancy.
How to Cook It: Easy Banana Blossom Sabzi
Main issue: It’s bitter if you don’t clean it right.
Step 1: Clean It
Peel the purple layers. Inside each layer you’ll find a small yellow flower and a thin plastic-like strip. Throw away the strip and the hard stem inside the small flower. Only keep and chop the purple petal part.
Step 2: Kill the Bitterness
Put the chopped pieces in water with 1 spoon salt + 1/2 spoon turmeric. Leave 1 hour. Then squeeze hard and rinse 2-3 times with fresh water. 90% bitter taste will be gone.
Step 3: Cook It
Cook it just like you make potato-cauliflower. Fry onion, tomato, ginger-garlic. Add turmeric, coriander powder, salt, chili. Add the flower. Cover and cook 15 mins. Crush some roasted peanuts on top. Tastes amazing.
Final Words
Look, this isn’t some magic cure. But it’s definitely a “superfood” our elders knew about. Use it with your regular medicine and diet, and you’ll feel the difference.
I shared what I tried. Now you tell me.
