Are We Raising Confident Children or Just Obedient Ones?

Every parent wants to raise their child well. To achieve this, they set some rules. Sleeping on time, speaking with respect, studying hard, eating healthy, and behaving properly in front of elders – these rules are good and they help build a child's future. Such discipline gives children direction and teaches them values that stay with them for life.

But the problem starts when rules stop being rules and become strictness. When every small action of a child is controlled, when they are not allowed to ask questions, and when their feelings are ignored, parenting becomes pressure instead of guidance.

When a child is stopped at every step, scolded for every wish, and not allowed to speak in front of others, it is not discipline; it is fear. From the outside, the child looks quiet and obedient, but inside, they are slowly losing their confidence. They start to think that their ideas are not important and that making mistakes is not allowed.

I have experienced this myself. When I had to choose my subject and decide my future profession, I told my father what I wanted to study. But he said I am not capable of it and I will study what he tells me. I don't know if I could have done it or not, but maybe I could have if I got the chance. That wish stayed inside me. Where to go, when to go, how long to sit, who to talk to and for how long, everything was always decided for me. So I know how it feels when your wishes have no value.

In such children, self-confidence slowly starts to disappear. They become afraid to try something new. They feel that if they make a mistake, they will be scolded. They have many wishes in their hearts. They want to say something and become something, but they cannot express themselves. They feel that their words have no value and that no one will listen to them.

This lack of confidence does not stay only in childhood. It stays with them for years. Even after growing up, they consider themselves less than others, hesitate to share their opinions, stay silent in groups, and carry a lifelong feeling that they wish they had done what they truly wanted. Those unspoken wishes can continue to hurt them.

Good parenting does not mean controlling everything. Good parenting means listening to the child and giving them space to express themselves. It means showing them that their feelings and wishes matter. Allowing them to make mistakes and then explaining with love what is right and wrong is also part of good parenting. Children have the right to speak, ask questions, and dream.

Remember

A child who is afraid to speak today may struggle to make decisions about their own life tomorrow. Make rules, but not so strict that your child learns to hide their wishes in their own home.
