How to Explain Climate Change Simply;Causes and Effects
One of the most important issues we have in our world today is climate change. Whilst people may hear about it regularly on TV, social media and in the news, not everyone has a clear understanding of what it actually means. Many people may think it is just warmer weather or impacting only certain countries. But actually it can impact the entire planet - humans, animals, plants and nature. So explaining it simply can help everyone understand the importance of it and make some changes to look after our planet.

What is Climate Change?

Climate change is due to global temperatures and changes to weather patterns. It can happen naturally over thousands or millions of years. However, recently, the climate has started to change much quicker than it would naturally - due largely to humans.
One of the main reasons that climate change is such an issue in recent times, is because there are now increased levels of greenhouse gases. These come in the form of carbon dioxide and methane. Once these gases get into our atmosphere they trap heat from the Sun and increase the global temperature.
Imagine our earth is wearing a duvet! If there were a natural amount of greenhouse gases then it would act like a cosy cover keeping us warm enough to live on Earth. However, if humans put too many Greenhouse Gasses into the atmosphere it will thicken, therefore trapping too much heat meaning our earth gets warmer.

What Causes Climate Change?

There are multiple reasons humans cause climate change:

Burning Fossil Fuels

Many industries use coal, oil and natural gas to create energy, run factories and power vehicles. When humans burn fossil fuels it creates an emission of carbon dioxide, creating a large contribution to global warming.

Destroying Trees

Trees are extremely important when creating a healthy environment. They take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen. However, when natural environments are destroyed to create new farmland, roads and buildings there are fewer trees leaving less to take in carbon dioxide. This makes our climate problem worse.

Industrialisation

Many useful products are made from factories; however, due to certain processes Carbon Dioxide and greenhouse gases can be released into the atmosphere. Cement, Steel, Chemicals and other materials can be part of global warming.

Agriculture/Waste

There are many Greenhouse Gasses created from farming, farm animals and waste. For example, cows create methane through digestion and methane is released from landfills.

Impact On Our Planet

Climate change can create many issues in the environment.

Firstly, the global temperature has increased taking summer temperatures to higher levels. Many places will experience more frequent or severe heat waves. This can make people very unwell due to the extreme temperatures - particularly children, the elderly and people out working.
Secondly, melting glaciers and ice sheets. This causes the sea level to rise meaning there is a higher chance of flooding on the coastline. Those who live by the ocean can suffer as their home, business and community may be damaged.
Climate change can cause changes to rainfall. Some places have longer periods of drought whilst others have more rainfall causing flooding. This can cause damage to crops and less food available.
Many animals rely on certain temperatures and habitats. If their habitat changes too quickly they may struggle to find food, shelter and find the right place to breed.

Why Should Everyone Care About Climate Change?

It is not just an environmental issue, but impacts our health, food production, water and economy.
Farmers rely on the correct weather to be able to plant crops. If the weather is unusual, experiencing high temperatures, droughts and floods this can decrease how much they can produce. This could lead to food being more expensive.
Extreme weather can cause damage to roads, schools, hospitals and homes. Money may need to be spent by governments and communities.
By knowing what climate change is people can make informed decisions and encourage communities to plan ahead.

What Can We Do To Help reduce climate change?

Whilst it is a large issue globally we can all make small changes as individuals and in our communities to make a positive impact.
Try these tips:

• Save electricity: Turn off lights, fans, and electronic devices when they are not being used. Choose energy-efficient appliances whenever possible.

• Plant and protect trees: Trees absorb carbon dioxide and provide shade, shelter, and cleaner air.
• Use public transportation: Walking, cycling, carpooling, or using buses can help reduce emissions from vehicles.
• Reduce plastic waste: Reuse shopping bags, bottles, and containers instead of regularly purchasing disposable products.
• Avoid wasting food: Buy only what you need, store food properly, and use leftovers whenever possible.
• Spread awareness: Share accurate information about climate change with friends, family members, and your community.

Investing in renewable energy, improving public transport, protecting forests and creating cleaner technology can all help reduce greenhouse gases from governments and Businesses.

Conclusion

Climate change may sound like a complex scientific subject. However, the fundamental meaning is easy to understand. It means the long-term changes to the climate of the Earth. Humans are causing the Earth to get warmer due to releasing too many Greenhouse Gasses.
This is causing many issues such as temperatures rising, ice melting, changes to rainfall and pressure on natural ecosystems, which can impact our health, food, homes and future generations.
However, we are not helpless! Individuals, communities, governments and businesses can all help make real changes. Saving energy, planting trees, reducing waste and encouraging clean sources of energy can all help us create a healthier environment.
We all share a responsibility to look after our Earth. Understanding climate change and making informed decisions in our daily lives can help us create a cleaner, safer and sustainable future for everyone.
