I Left Everything Behind and Now I Cannot Go Home
My name is Amina. I am 30 years old. I live alone in a small flat in Lithuania.
Five years ago my life was different. I got married in Pakistan. My husband was a good-looking man. Everyone said I was lucky. I believed them. I cooked for him. I cleaned the house. I tried to be a perfect wife.
One day I found messages on his phone. He was talking to another woman. He was meeting her. When I asked him, he got angry. He said I was crazy. He said I imagined things. But the messages were real. He cheated on me.
I felt broken. I could not stay in that house. I needed to leave. I applied for a study programme in Lithuania. I got accepted. I packed a small bag and left Pakistan. I told my family I wanted to study. I did not tell them the full truth about my husband.
In Lithuania, life was hard at first. The weather was cold. The language was difficult. I lived in a student dormitory. I worked part-time in a café to pay for food. At night I cried in my bed. I missed my mother. I missed the smell of home.

Months passed. I finished my studies, but I stayed. I found a simple job. I rented a small room. I made a few friends, but no one close. I was free from my husband, but I was also alone.
Back in Pakistan, my family started to talk. Someone told them I left my husband. They thought I was the problem. They thought I cheated. They thought I ran away for a new life with another man. My mother called me and cried. My father stopped speaking to me. My uncles said I brought shame to the family.
I tried to explain. I told them the truth about my husband. They did not believe me. In their eyes, a good wife stays. A good wife suffers in silence. A woman who leaves is always wrong.
Now I cannot go back. If I return, people will look at me with cold eyes. My family will not open the door with love. I have no place there anymore.
Some nights I sit by the window and look at the dark sky. I think about my young years. I think about the wedding photos. I think about the future I once imagined — a home, children, respect. All of that is gone.
I am free, but I am also lost. I have no husband. I have no family near me. I have only my small room and my quiet life in this cold country.
Sometimes I ask myself: Was it better to stay and suffer? Or was it better to leave and be alone forever?

I still do not know the answer.
But this is my life now.
I am Amina.
I am 30.
And I cannot go home.
