Trump slams former lawyer over $50m deal with family of pardoned banker

US President Donald Trump has savaged one of his former lawyers for doing a deal worth over $50m with the family of a Venezuelan banker Trump later pardoned.

Former federal prosecutor Alina Habba Mildon allegedly signed the lucrative deal while still a federal prosecutor and then worked for the banker’s family while also serving as an adviser to the US Department of Justice.

“I thought it was totally obnoxious and outrageous and it’s not acceptable,” Trump said Saturday at a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida.

“This is not acceptable in any shape or form,” he said.

Habba Mildon signed a four-year deal in October 2025 with a company owned by the family of Julio Herrera Velutini, a Venezuelan banker seeking a presidential pardon, The New York Times reported.

Herrera was accused of bribing former Puerto Rico Gov. Wanda Vazquez Garced to fire a financial regulator investigating his bank. He was facing federal bribery charges in the US before reaching a plea deal with prosecutors in August 2025.

Habba Mildon's contract with her family's company was worth over $50 million over four years, including $10 million a year and bonuses.

Habba was then the acting U.S. attorney for New Jersey, a post Trump appointed her to after she served as his personal lawyer.

She stepped down from the role in December after a court ruled she was not legally able to do the job. She quickly landed another job, this one as a senior adviser to the attorney general at the Justice Department.

Two weeks later, on Jan. 15, Trump granted Herrera a full pardon.

Mildon’s place in the government and links to Trump have raised questions about potential conflicts of interest.

The company that hired her, Concord Partners, has no public profile and is unclear about its business, according to the New York Times.

Habba Mildon denied any involvement in getting the pardon for Herrera.

“I was never paid to get a pardon, never spoke to anyone at the White House or the Justice Department about a pardon and never worked to get a pardon for anybody,” she told The Associated Press last week.

Trump was said to have been furious when he learned the size of her contract.

He told aides and allies that Habba Mildon should donate some of the money to his eventual presidential library or another Trump-aligned group, the New York Times reported.

He also said he told at least one ally Herrera’s family should stop paying off the balance of her contract.

Trump said Saturday that he told Habba Mildon he did not want her paid, calling it “terrible.”
